If cruising the Inside Passage to Alaska with your own boat is on your bucket list, but you are just a bit intimidated by the idea to tackle this journey on your own, or feel you lack the experience or knowledge for such long voyage, our Inside Passage Alaska Training Cruise is the perfect educational trip for you. While you learn hands-on how to navigate challenging passages and channels, anchor safely at night, deal with wind and water conditions and emergency situations, you can relax knowing that a captain with over 35 years experience has control of the wheel and is in charge of the vessel and its passengers.
This trip is also great for anyone wanting to enjoy all the scenery and nature-based activities along the way, but are not interested in learning how to cruise the Inside Passage.
Each training cruise covers about 700 nautical miles of unmatched beauty along the Inside Passage between Bellingham, Washington, the waters of British Columbia, CA and Southeast Alaska. All training cruises are one-way, so if you join us in Bellingham, WA on our northbound trip, you would fly home from Ketchikan, AK. If you join us on the southbound trip, you'd fly to Ketchikan, AK and disembark in Bellingham, WA.
We are privileged to have Captain Jim Kyle aboard as a guest captain during our northbound inside passage learning cruise in May/June 2020. Captain Jim Kyle has traveled the Inside Passage 98 times over the past 5 decades and his knowledge and experience are priceless. Kyle started out as commercial fisherman in Alaska, earned a master's degree in environmental policy, abandoned fishing for a few years to teach, then purchased the 62-foot salmon trawler Home Shore in 1984, continued fishing until 2002, at which time he turned the trawler into a sea kayaking mother ship offering multi-day sea kayaking adventure trips in Alaska. Captain Kyle is now retired, but his passion for Alaska and being on the water remains. He is looking forward to joining us to share his knowledge and experience on our Alaska Inside Passage Training Cruises.

Route & Training Topics
During north and south cruises from Bellingham to Ketchikan and vice versa we will transit the American San Juan and Canadian Golf Islands, Straight of Georgia, Queen Charlotte Sound, Northern BC and Dixon Entrance. We'll go through multiple tidal rapids and other gates to Southeast Alaska. Our focus will be on transiting the calmest of the many routes available for this cruise.
We'll run only during daylight hours starting early each day to give us time to stop along the way, visiting interesting anchorages and villages/towns. Early start for us does not mean an early rise for you, breakfast will be served on route at your leisure. If you are too leisurely you may get granola or lunch. We'll spend the majority of our nights in secluded anchorages. Our cruising schedule provides time each day for shore walks or explore anchorages and shorelines by kayak , paddle board (for the brave) or our motorized tender.
Hands-on training and instructions are flexible to fit your needs. We will cover any topic that you are interested in. The following is a list of common subjects:
PS: Our Chef De Cuisine Kerstin is a certified business and life coach if you like to discuss things other than boating and navigation or simply want to to hone your boat cooking skills.
